Problem statement

Uber is a technology company that is changing the way the world thinks about transportation. We have been growing globally at an incredible pace and are scaling a hyper efficient revenue systems infrastructure.

Our revenue platform environment supports the needs of our customers (e.g. Rider, Driver, Eaters, Restaurants, etc.). A key to Uber’s success is to be able to accurately and completely account for all events on the Uber platform (e.g. trips, Eats orders), quickly and efficiently onboard new LOBs on the platform, flexibly support local business requirements across 70 countries / 700+ cities, scale and integrate with core financial applications, ensure operational effectiveness for our billing team, and provide financial data for business insights and P&L analysis downstream.

What system capabilities would you expect to need to build in the platform?

Poposed Solution

With a 1.35 billion population, India is an emerging market for all growing businesses around the world. The huge customer base attracts large MNCs, growing start-ups, and market leaders to tap into the APAC region.
Out of the entire population, only 30% of the population live in urban areas, and the rest 70% live in rural areas (which accounts for 833 million prospective customer). With the rapid growth in roadways and infrastructure, all the villages are now getting well connected with cities and urban areas. This massive expansion is incomplete without transportation and with transportation comes Uber into the picture.

Making Uber accessible to the rural population comes with great challenges. The biggest challenge in our way is the lack of stable internet infrastructure. To fix this issue and build a new system capability in the existing Uber platform I have presented my research here.

Existing system capabilities and Payment methods:

The trip cycle
The payment cycle

Bottom Line: The whole ride booking life-cycle is dependant on internet connectivity.

Proposed system capabilities and Payment method enhancement for the existing platform

Uber cab can now be booked without internet through USSD and through SMS (location coordinates).

Now the payment can also be made without internet using UPI Lite.

Note: This is a very high level of overview of the solution and not the complete solution.
